Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

About

For nearly 50 years, SHPE has been dedicated to increasing the number of Hispanics in STEM. Today, SHPE is the nation’s largest association dedicated to fostering Hispanic leadership in the STEM field. Each year, SHPE coordinates the largest Hispanic technical conference in the U.S., bringing together over 5,000 Hispanic university students, STEM professionals, and pre-college students. Over 300 corporate and government agencies attend the conference to recruit talent for paid internships and full-time positions.

SHPE Foundation programs are conducted in cooperation with prestigious academic institutions across the country. The foundation also partners with corporate sponsors and federal agencies to expose students to STEM opportunities and the technical knowledge necessary to succeed. SHPE Foundation has established broad-based educational enrichment, recruitment, and retention programs throughout the country. A major focus of the SHPE Foundation’s STEM educational activities has been in locations with fast-growing Hispanic communities ripe for nurturing a pipeline of future engineers and technical innovators. This has been bolstered by a successful scholarship program and the support of SHPE Chapters and partner organizations.

SHPE KU: SHPE at KU was established in 1988. The purpose was originally to create a medium in which the small population of Hispanic/Latino students studying engineering at the university could network with other Hispanic engineers in the area. It was soon apparent that networking was just one of the many benefits that SHPE would provide to students. The role of the chapter has evolved to where it currently serves as a way for students to receive tips and encouragement for academic and professional success. Programs offered by SHPE, like mentorSHPE, improved Hispanic engineers' success and involvement in the industry. Events like Noche de Ciencias help create a network and a Familia throughout the multiple majors in STEM.
